Reducing stress in a shelter environment

This scenario is about a dog in a shelter that barks crazy when people walk by especially when they are walking noisy dog past him. -Move the dog to a kennel where volunteers won’t have to pass by with other dogs or the

volunteers should use an alternative route to avoid passing by him.

-Following a positive reinforcement regime, a trainer or volunteer can help the dog by

desensitizing him to the loud noise.

-a shelter is a stressful place for any animal to be in, and if volunteers can help reduce

the stress within the kennels it will also help the dog. We can reduce stress by placing

volunteers inside the kennels and have them playing and working with these dogs to

keep them occupied and stimulated while other volunteers go and walk with a few of the

dogs, and so a rotation can be done to reduce the total amount of excitement and barking

and in that helping not only th stressed dog, but the rest as well. This will take a lot of

time, patience and practice to get it working.

-the other option is to place the stressed dog in a foster home with calm/no dogs and

adult/no kids, where they can separately work with him in building confidence and slowly

working on his stress levels.
